Earliest meeting: Whit Monday 28th May 1860
Final meeting: Monday 5th June 1865
There are probably no races better known than the Blaydon races, immortalised in the famous 19th Century folk song,”As went te Blaydon races, t’was on the ninth of June….”, and the first meeting took place in the Northumbrian village of Blaydon on Tuesday 29th May 1860 at Stella Haugh, just a mile West of the town. Also mentioned in the song was a pub, The Robin Adair, which was on the Scotswood Road adjacent to the racecourse. The inaugural meeting was a two day affair starting on Monday 28th May 1860 with horse races, followed on Whit Tuesday by a regatta. Whilst the final meeting operating under the Jockey Club Rules of racing took place on Monday 5th June 1865, ‘flapping’ meetings, including one on Monday 30th May 1887, continued until 1916.

This racecourse is covered in Volume 1 of Racecourses Here Today and Gone Tomorrow. Ordering details shown below.

I am grateful to Ordnance Survey (© Crown Copyright) for permission to use the map shown below, and to John Hodges for drawing my attention to it.

I am grateful to Keith Nicholson for an update and photos from the former, famous Blaydon Racecourse. Keith comments "We went t'Blaydon Races, 'twas on the 9th of June" although actually 'twas the 29th of October 2021 and the sun came out. After the Stella Power Station was knocked down many years earlier, the site lay derelict until 5 or 6 years ago when houses and a few business units were built. The only bit not built on was the old finishing straight, probably because of the huge substation and accompanying electricity cables close by.

The first photograph is looking west down what would have been the last furlong or so. The second photo is from past the winning post and looking east, note how close it was to the Tyne. There remains no evidence at all of its previous incarnation as a racecourse.

Course today

On Stella Haugh, adjacent to the Robin Adair pub. No evidence of the racecourse remains as the Stella South Power Station was built on the course in the mid 1950s.

If you have photos, postcards, racecards. badges, newspaper cuttings or book references about the old course, or can provide a photo of how the ground on which the old racecourse stood looks today, then email johnwslusar@gmail.com
